The Kitchen Reveal!

Since this is only my 4th or so post, I know you'll remember my old kitchen.

BEFORE:

Not much to be desired.  After painting the cabinets, building up the island, new appliances, taking down that brick wall and some other things.....

AFTER:

Ahh....much better.  I know it's a bit self indulgent, but off I go....more before and afters:

BEFORE of the desk area:

...and the much better AFTER:

I am looking for a chair for the desk, but overall so much better!

Here are some more photos.  In the island I opted for a much smaller sink so I would have more counter space:

I also went with a single larger sink.  I've previously had a double sink and was always struggling to wash large items in it.  With this baby, my kids want to take a bath in it!  I highly recommend a large single sink if you use the dishwasher daily.  A double sink is good if you hand wash lots of items in which case soaking is a must.

I, however, love my dishwasher and run it 2 times a day.  I would wash myself in there if I could!

Here are some shots with the counter top with the back splash and the wall color.  The counters are granite, River White.  I originally wanted the marble, but after some research decided I would be too stressed about dings and etchings, especially with 3 kids running around.

I saw the River White and loved it.  There are sections I love more than others, but since my cabinets are white it gives some subtle contrast.  I have begun to fall in love with the light garnet spots in some of the lighter areas.

Take a look:

This section is from the desk area.  Here, I decided to go with the granite back splash instead of the subway tile so some of the wall color can be seen.  The wall color is BM Night Mist and I love it.  It's subtle but not washed out.

Here are a couple of shots of my oven/stove and microwave area:

I went with all Bosch appliances (except for my Sub-Zero fridge which I did not replace).  So far I am happy with Bosch.  After much hemming and hawing, I decided to convert my electric top to gas.  Excellent decision!  Love the gas!

I'm not sure what I'm doing in the kitchenette area.  I love the table, but the bench doesn't match and the chairs either have to go or need some paint.  Suggestions, please.

Phew!  Overall I'm very happy with my new kitchen.  It didn't break the bank either since I painted the cabinets, installed the cabinet hardware and painted the walls.  Lots of hard work.  We hired an excellent contractor to rebuild the island, take down the brick wall and install the moldings on the cabinets....oh, and the back splash, install the faucets and refinish the floors.

Boy, am I pooped!

  2. Amazing makeover It is so gorgeous. Everything about it. I love the granite. I am a huge fan of white marble with the gray veining, so this was a great compromise!

  3. Wow! What a great job! I love the granite. If you like to make pastries, you can always get a marble board! (Marble should really only be used in wet rooms because of its porousness)

  7. Wow! This is gorgeous! Job well done for sure! I'm with Centsational Girl on painting the brick, but that may be because I live in a 100 year old victorian home. I'm always searching for ideas to redo our kitchen and wish that everyone would let us in on how much their transformation cost them so I can get an idea for how much I need to save ;} Thanks for the inspiration!

  12. It's beautiful! I especially like the desk area with the nooks and shelves. Organizing mail and avoiding piles and piles of paper is one of my family's biggest challenges.

I found your blog through Colour Me Happy. Hope you enjoy your blogging adventure.

  18. Hey r, thanks for finding my kitchen! I really like the Bosch appliances. I have the microwave, dishwasher (super quiet) and gas stove. I already had a sub-zero fridge which I did not replace. I have no complaints with Bosch. I wish you all the best with your kitchen! Let me know if you have any other specific questions. I loved redoing my kitchen. Check out my post on my kitchen inspiration photos if you haven't done so already.

  20. The paint is color matched Benjamin Moore's 'Night Mist'. I matched it with Pittsburgh Paint from True Value. I still love it!

  21. Hi Tania- What color is your subway title? I picked up one from Lowes and Home depot (one being bright white and snow white) but both don't seem white enough compared to the white that will be used on our cabinets ( which matches the molding). Does yours match your cabinet color?

    ReplyDelete
  22. We bought the subway tile off the shelf from Home Depot. I think it was 'snow white.' My cabinets are painted BM 'White Dove.' The tile is a bit whiter than the cabinets if you look very closely. I do not think it's an issue at all. I would go with the closest white to match your cabinets and don't worry too much about being an exact match of whites.

  23. Hi Tania,
I'm thinking of installing the rover white in my kitchen, the only thing is I cook for a minim of 10 people a day. Are you having any problems with staining? Please get back to me you are my last hope.

  24. Wow! That's a lot of people to cook for! I would not hesitate in recommending the river white. No issues staining whatsoever. It is very durable. I have the polished, sealed (regular) version. I cannot attest to the durability of the honed version. Happy cooking!

  25. Sorry another question from me :( Is your molding the same color as your cabinets?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi r. Yes, the molding is the same color as the cabinets (White Dove by Benjamin Moore). Ask as many questions as you wish!

  27. I just discovered your blog while searching for "river white granite." I feel like a copy-cat. We just bought Bosch appliances, hired a painter to paint our kitchen cabinets White Dove, bought river white granite this morning, and are doing white subway tile. Well, at least I know my kitchen will be awesome! :)

  28. Hi Camille! Your kitchen will be awesome! I still love mine. Thanks so much for your comment!

  29. I'm glad you still like it! Our granite just went in today. :) Is the Bosch dishwasher not the most amazing appliance ever? I still get giddy every time I run a load and my dishes come out sparkling clean!

  30. So beautiful! I love how you saved the cabinets too!

I chose River White granite countertops for the same reasons. It has a look similar to marble without the maintenance. I did get a remnant of marble for the butcher blocks, but it might not be as much as an issue for what I'm using it for.

  34. Hello what colour grout did you use with your subway tiles?

    ReplyDelete
  35. How are your painted cabinets holding up? We're interested in painting ours but I'm nervous about chipping. Are you noticing any gaps in the painted seams of the cabinets from change in temp?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi Tania How are you I have to compliment you for being so outgoing and getting things done. It is not easy. Even hiring a contractor the vision is still all yours. So you did a wonderful remodel. My question is how are you feeling about the night mist and do you still love the entire look? I ask because I have the river white in my bathroom and have so for a while...but I burned out the gray because I had it through out my home but not in bathroom. But because of the River white I am considering going with gray at least for the bathroom. With the wine colors in the granite I have to be careful. Also has the white dove remained clean and does it have a little yellow in it. Thank you

    1. Hi Chad. Sorry for the late reply but to answer your question, I’m still very happy with the whole look. I still love the night mist and the dove white. The cabinets have not yellowed. and hold up well to a scrubbing every now and then. Thanks for your comment!

  38. I'm pulling out my hair trying to figure out which color countertops to go with. I really LOVE what you did to your kitchen - so now I may have found my solution & go with River White! I have an accent wall and blinds that are a deep red color tone which I think would go nicely with the River White scheme. Is your paint color Night Mist more blue-ish or grayish in tone?

  39. By the way, my cabinets are also white.
